Another Impact is here! Has it already been a week? Last week, Team Christian (only containing the champ, Christian Cage and AJ Styles) had to face off against Sting and Abyss. Team 3D offered their legacy up in a match against LAX, but were countered with electric steel cage of doom. The Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels beat down Jerry Lynn again. One eyed, Chris Harris attacked ex partner James Storm. And mama Abyss shows up to interrupt the match and steals Abyss away, leaving Sting to get beaten down by Christian, AJ Styles, and newest member of Team Christian, Scott Steiner! Now onto this week’s Impact!
We start with Sting and James Mitchell talking at a restaurant. It is revealed that Abyss’ mother is the one who shot his father, and that Abyss is the one who took the jail time instead. Mitchell says that Abyss will do whatever he wants him to do, since otherwise he will tell the authorities what Abyss’ mom did and she will go to prison. Mitchell leaves and says he has a meeting with Christian. I just loved the way it looked so normal and out of place seeing the two talking in a restaurant about something so outrageous!
We go to the ring for he first match and it’s a six man X Division elimination cage match (can the name of the mach be any longer?). The contestants are Jerry Lynn, Sonjay Dutt, THE Austin Starr, Alex Shelley, Shark Boy, and Petey Williams.
The rules are such, everyone in the ring at the same time, you are eliminated via pin fall or submission, once there are only two left, first man out wins. Seems a bit too much but here we go. Everyone pairs off as chaos ensues. Dutt hits a big flip off the ropes onto Alex Shelley for a two count. Lynn hits a hip toss on every last person in the match. Shelley drills him in the back of the head with his leg. Shark Boy and Shelley go at it, hits Shelley with the Deep Sea Drop and pins Alex Shelley for a three count? Shark Boy just pinned someone! The deep blue sea has just frozen over! With Shelley now out of the match, it carries on.
Shark Boy attacks Sonjay Dutt, Dutt works over Shark Boy with some fancy flips. Dutt and Lynn go at it, attempt at a hurricarana by Dutt, and Lynn throws him against the cage! Cradle Piledriver by Lynn and Dutt is pinned and eliminated. Austin Starr attacks Lynn before he can gully get up, raking his back. Shark Boy attacks Starr from behind, sets him up for the Dead Sea Driver…Brainbuster on Shark Boy by Starr, for the three count!
Petey Williams and Jerry Lynn team up on Starr. Lynn lets Williams hit the Canadian Destroyer on Starr for the pin. Now it’s just Lynn and Williams, first one to escape wins! Lynn attacks Williams, knocking him down then climbs up the cage.
Williams follows, and there is a brief fight on top of the cage and then on their way down the other side. Lynn is the first to land and gets the win. While celebrating, The Fallen Angel, Christopher Daniels comes from behind and hits him HARD with a baseball bat to the back of his head. Daniels does a last rite motion then walks away slowly. The match I felt was way to short and I really don’t understand the point of it really. It was a cage match/elimination/random X Division match up. And really it felt like it sadly. We further push the Daniels/Lynn feud though which should be damn good!
Out back, Tomko is just arriving and before he can be asked a question, Christian shows up to talk to him. Before Tomko can say a word, Christian takes a phone call, during the call Tomko leaves, when he turns back to talk to Tomko he shrugs it off. Obviously there is the big tension between the two, which can work. But I don’t see Tomko being able to really compete for the world title, so it will be for nothing in the end, but damn if it won’t be fun to watch! Commercial break time.
We return and out come Team Christian! Scott Steiner, AJ Styles, and the champ, Captain Charisma, Christian Cage. Christian wants to make it official that Big Poppa Pump, Scott Steiner is the third member of his team. Steiner gets some boos which is always good, and can be quite hard in Florida it seems. Steiner mentions that he’s doing it for the title shot Christian promised (that’s the third title shot he has promised now). Christian brings out team member number four, Abyss w/ James Mitchell. Christian says this completes the team, Styles points out that maybe in Canada it is different but where he is from this is four people not five. Huge, loud Sting chants. Christian says well he will announce his fifth member, Tomko!
Tomko’s music hits and there is no Tomko…. Christian announces him again and eventually out Tomko comes, looking quite unhappy. Steiner and Styles are clapping the new member. After Tomko hits the ring, Christian goes to hug him but is stopped. Tomko says since he showed up, Christian has been giving him lots of promises but most of all he wants the title shot he was promised. Even though Christian has promised the whole team shots (including Abyss we find) he wants his shot tonight! Christian complains that Tomko is being too selfish, that the title shots won’t happen until after Lethal Lockdown.
Kurt Angle’s music hits and out comes Angle, Samoa Joe, and Rhino. Angle says that Christian was never going to give Tomko a title shot. He asks Tomko if he wants to join Team Angle so he can beat up Christian. Before anything can be answered, Jim Cornette comes out and says this isn’t drama, or a soap opera this is a wrestling program. So tonight it will be a member of Team Angle against a member of Team Christian, winner gets to have Tomko on their side. If Tomko agrees, he will get a title shot guaranteed. Tomko eagerly agrees.
Angle and his team are quite happy while Team Christian is VERY upset. We then go off to commercial break. This makes things a bit more interesting. Usually things are very simple when you make up your team, so glad to see a curve ball thrown in. Plus this defiantly keys in Tomko finally getting a title shot. Though if everyone is going to get their shot I think that means Christian will stay champion for a bit longer. For a second I thought they were just going to have Tomko jump ship and then turn on Team Angle at the pay per view for the typical War Games swerve, but now I’m not as sure.
We return to a quick Team 3D/LAX promo. Bubba Ray says LAX has to earn a legacy and pushes St Louis a bit. Konnan says LAX is what stands between 3D getting a real legacy getting the NWA match up. Then Konnan goes on about the electric cage match they put on the line last week. Apparently Team 3D still hasn’t agreed but we know they will so why put it off?
Backstage Jeremy Borash is with Team Angle. Kurt Angle says he is the one who needs to be in the match tonight. Since they didn’t get Abyss and Sting so it’s up to him to be a man of his word and get Tomko so his team can annihilate Christian’s team. And off to commercial? Mighty short segment there guess it was to deal with the long talk before hand.
Back to wrestling action, Eric Young, representing Robert Roode Inc comes out and tries to avoid the pyros, failing to do so. His opponent is Cowboy James Storm along with Jackie Moore. Storm charges at Eric Young, they have a good quick exchange. Jackie grabs Young’s leg and Storm beats him down severely. Big boot t0 the side of Young’s head that leads to a two count.
Young hits a spinning clothes line and suplex, and gets a two count on Storm. Young continues to have the momentum, attempts a high risk move, and Jackie instead pushes him off the turnbuckle. As he falls, Storm hits the Super Kick for the win. After the match, Gail Kim and Wildcat Chris Harris charge in to attack Storm and Jackie. Security runs out immediately, the bad guys start to get away, and Harris catches up with Storm and the two brawl to the back.
Still in the ring, Eric Young is slowly getting up. Out come Robert Roode and Ms Brooks. Roode berates Young again, asking who his friend is, taunting him. Eric nearly fights back until Roode reminds him that if he hits him, he will fire him from Robert Roode INC and he can NEVER wrestle in TNA again!
Out comes Petey Williams for the save. Nearly hits the Canadian Destroyer on Roode before he slides away. Is Petey Williams Eric Young’s friend? Who can tell? I guess no matter what Robert Roode will wrestle someone at the pay per view. If it’s Williams I’m hopeful for a solid match. It was a short match, but ah well it’s typical in an Eric Young match. I hope the whole friend of Eric Young thing moves the story a bit more, it’s getting a bit stagnant.
Backstage Team Christian is arguing. Christian asks for a volunteer to do the job tonight against Kurt Angle, plus he’s the main event. What would TNA be without him? Steiner says his muscles pull people in, and Styles says it’s his cool hood! Mitchell volunteers Abyss. He’s the work horse.
Abyss gets up ready to put up a fight and Mitchell reminds him that with just one phone call his mom is in jail. Team Christian and Mitchell leave as Abyss is obviously conflicted. Commercial time again. Mitchell is turning into the big bad guy here, and Christian doesn’t seem to mind since it helps him. When they were saying who could sell the tickets the most was very funny and the main reason I love Christian and Styles together.
Back and Tenay introduces Christy Hemme and VKM along with Lance Hoyt via satellite. Hemme says though her team failed last time but that’s alright. Kip James says there is no place for women in wrestling (how is he the good guy here?) and she is holding VKM away from the NWA tag belts. Hemme says she has a new team and this one will succeed. Kip says she needs to just stop. Okay, let’s see Hemme’s team beat the crap out of VKM so Kip can shut up!
Main event time. First out comes Tomko with two contracts, one for each team. Out comes first is Abyss with James Mitchell. And then out comes, Kurt Angle all by himself (because Angle doesn’t need anyone). Lockup, Abyss powers Angle back. Take down as Angle works over Abyss’ ankle. Angle works on the ankle more, after a big clothesline by Abyss, Angle hits the Ankle Lock! Abyss makes it to the ropes. Christian comes out and yells at Abyss as we hit our last commercial break.
Back to action as Abyss hits Angle with a huge suplex! The crowd is heavily behind Angle. Exchange of big blows. From no where, Angle hits a German suplex, Angle takes down his straps for the Olympic Slam, and no. Abyss tries for the Shock Treatment, no! Angle puts on the Ankle Lock. No matter how much Abyss tries can’t get out. He does a summersault and sends Angle into the ref! Black Hole Slam by Abyss! New ref runs in and it’s 1-2-no!
As Angle is celebrating, Tomko slowly walks in, while Christian is yelling. Tomko gets in the r9ng, raises Angle’s hand, and then attacks him! Tomko beats down Angle, Christian brings out his team’s contract and Tomko signs it. The two continue to beat down Angle, out runs Rhino! Then Styles as they beat down Rhino, then Samoa Joe who is met by Scott Steiner, Joe gets the beat down too. Now with all three of Team Angle on the ground, all five members of Team Christian celebrate as the show ends.
Well the Tomko thing ended up going in a circle it seems. I think Tomko may end up turning on Team Christian, or it may be Abyss finally turning face in the end. Either way right now I see Christian’s team being the one with the guy who turns.
The six man X Division thing seemed sort of pointless. I guess it was all to further the Lynn/Daniels thing, but I’m not sure. Alex Shelley better try and get revenge, randomly having him lose to the jobber of all, Shark Boy seemed way to random, even for TNA. Though a Shark Boy vs. Alex Shelley match could be very fun, more of both men is good in my book!
Abyss will be turning good very shortly, and the redemption storyline will end finally. It was very nice to see Team Christian stand triumphant over Team Angle, just to show that it’s not all about Angle’s team always looking most powerful.
Overall, except for the quick Young/Storm match this was a nicely paced Impact. More stories were pushed and the Lockdown card seems to actually be put together well. Really my only complaint is there was no build for next week, they could have at least set something up for the next Impact. Ah well, if that’s my only nitpick, it was a good week!
