The story behind The Happening sounds interesting. There is a paranoid family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a huge threat to humanity. It’s a thriller. It sounds like something I would watch. Of course, that was until I found out M. Night Shyamalan wrote and will direct it, which was when the worry set in.
He had a career that started out so well. The Sixth Sense was genius and that was about it. Then we had a downward spiral of sucktastic stupidity including Signs (Is it just me or was Mel drunk through this entire movie?), The Village (What the f-ck was Joaquin thinking?), and Lady in the Water. I am baffled that any studio would even give him as much as the $57million dollar budget he’s been offered for The Happening.
Now here’s where things get interesting. In fact, for me, they even become bothersome. There are some good actors attaching themselves to this flick. Among the most current, according to Variety, are Mark Walhberg and Zooey Deschanel. So, two good actors that have starred in some of the best and some of the most unique flicks in recent times have decided to be in The Happening. Did I mention that it was The Happening by M. Night Shyamalan?
The movie is being shot in August in Philadelphia and has a preliminary release date of June 2008. That leaves a lot of time to hope that two excellent actors pull off the performance to make a possibly drab movie worth watching. Deep down I know that their careers won’t be affected by a box office flop and that perhaps if he has one more that M. Night will be done making horribly bad films. However, I just hate the idea of seeing Mark Wahlberg in anything that is less than his talent deserves. I will always remember him as Tommy Corn and the many other characters he has played and I will hope this one stands out, as well.
Of course, I am sadly expecting a flop. Even as I sit here hoping for the best, I have to wonder how a good idea and a good set of actors could equal a bad movie. Yet, I already know the answer in three words or less. M. Night Shayamalan. Though just this once, I would love to be wrong.
