Breaking News: Burning Car Drives into Glasgow Airport - Possible Terrorist Attack

June 30, 2007 @ 12:36 pm

Glasgow CrashThe UK is on high alert as the second possible terrorist attack hit its target, when a burning car drove into the Glasgow Airport on Saturday, June 30, 2007. The car, which drove through a security barrier blocking entrance to the airport’s terminal building, was engulfed in flames as it drove into the building.

Initial reports, by CNN.com list eyewitnesses as saying the explosion in the car was not huge, so it could have been an explosion of the petrol tank. However, with the UK on high alert already from a potential terrorist attack being thwarted just a day before in London, authorities are being as cautious as possible. As information on this story becomes available, we will be updating this page.

The car that drove into the airport terminal building was in the style of an SUV (perhaps a Jeep Cherokee). Witnesses say that immediately following the crash a man jumped out of the car. After running from the car, he was quickly apprehended by police. While it is unclear if there are any casualties or injuries from this most recent potential terrorist attack, witnesses to the incident say a man (possibly a second man who left the car) was on fire. At this time, police have two men in custody.

CNN Reports….”The jeep is completely on fire and it exploded not long after. It exploded at the entrance to the terminal,” one witness, Stephen Clarkson, told the BBC.

Glasgow Airport is the busiest airport in Scotland. At the present time, the airport has closed, staff and flight passengers have been evacuated, and the airport has been shut down to incoming and outgoing flights until further notice.

Just one day earlier, two cars, believed to be filled with explosives (authorities defused the potentially explosive cars filled with nails, fuel and gas cannisters) were found in London. The potential for hundreds of casualties/injuries, by these car bombs was a very real threat. The first car was found yesterday, July 29, 2007 at Piccadilly Circus. It was parked near a nightclub. The second car, which was found approximately one hour later, was less than a kilometer from the first car. It was located at Trafalgar Square.

Scotland Yard, who is investigating the incidents, has linked the two car attacks in London together. However, at this time, it is unclear whether the incidents are related to the burning car at the Glasgow Airport. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.

Updates: Theorists wonder if these latest incidents are testing the relationship between new UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and President Bush, as well as testing how Brown will react to terrorist attacks.

It is believed that Scotland Yard has footage of two suspects who left the two cars in London. With this in mind, it is now believed that these cars were meant to be suicide bomb cars not remote detonated. When neither car exploded, it is believed the suspects left the scene.

Two suspects in custody are believed to be of Asian decent.

I am the proud Papa of a son, Dylan Michael Keller. Other than spending time with my son, I have two main obsessions in life; video games & movies. Often, the two accompany time spent with Dylan. I’ve been married to Andrea for 13 years this December. One thing I’ve learned about married life is to always expect the unexpected. After nearly eleven years with just the three of us, and our Golden Retriever, Braeden, I’ve just found out I’m going to be a dad again. In my professional life, I’m a bit of a cyber geek. I enjoy D&D, writing stories, role-playing, computer games, working on websites, and just hanging out. I work for a computer firm doing computer-tech type work and that’s all I can really say about my job. In my fantasy life, I escape to the world of film. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve seen The Return of the King at least 37 times. I signed up to review movies, and you can guarantee I’ll do the job right. I hope you enjoy my reviews and always remember kids…Make Love, Not Warcraft.
