Homophobic ex-Grey’s Actor Washington Screams Racism

June 30, 2007 @ 1:55 pm

Isiah WashingtonIsaiah Washington is running his mouth again…this time about why he got fired from the hit ABC television drama, Grey’s Anatomy. The “homophobic” actor is screaming racism as he was axed after more then one gay-offensive “faux pas”. Initially, Washington seemed “apologetic” for his remarks, but like everything else, actions speak louder than words. Washington’s latest actions speak of a much, harsher reality.

The first “incident” in which Washington used an anti-gay slur occurred on set during a clash with co-star Patrick Dempsey. During the tiff, Washington used the slur to refer to co-star, T.R. Knight, who admitted he is a homosexual. This set off the frenzy in the media that followed and caused fellow Grey’s star, Katherine Heigl to defend her friend T.R. and chastise Washington for his behavior.

Washington, who initially tried to show remorse for his hateful and homophobic remarks, also suggested that he could go to counseling. However, that was not enough for the network or his cast mates, especially when he brought the incident back into the spotlight during the Golden Globes. This is when he denied ever saying that “word” (yes…he did say it again), which brought even more criticism from his second slip up.

Now, it is he, who is screaming discrimination after his character was written off the popular doctor drama. It had to be because he is black and not because he is a bigoted hate monger. Of course, who would ever fire someone for a gay slur anyway? In his latest interview with Newsweek, CNN reports exactly what Washington thinks about the firing.

“Someone heard the booming voice of a black man and got really scared and that was the beginning of the end for me. My mistake was believing that I would get the support from my network and all of my cast mates across the board. My mistake was believing I could correct a wrong with honesty and sincerity,” Washington tells the magazine.

He goes on to say that he was not overly willing to act like a “submissive” black man at work. This is the primary reason he was fired. I was not aware that calling someone a “f@ggot” was the Dominant right of all black men, but I guess you learn something new every day.

Washington goes on to say, “”I had a person in human resources tell me after this thing played out that ’some people’ were afraid of me around the studio. I asked her why, because I’m a 6-foot-1, black man with dark skin and who doesn’t go around saying ‘Yessah, massa sir’ and ‘No sir, massa’ to everyone?”

“It’s nuts when your presence alone can just scare people, and that made me a prime candidate to take the heat in a dysfunctional family.”

Washington, who initially showed no remorse until incident number two, is now trying to chalk up all the responsibility to the network and reverse his own discrimination with a little discrimination claim of his own. This reporter isn’t buying it, and neither is most of the general public.

You can check out his interview in the latest issue of Newsweek, and find out what Isaiah Washington has to say, in his first television interview since he left Grey’s Anatomy, when he stops by Larry King Live on Monday, July 2, 2007. The episode airs at 9:00 PM EST.
