I never had a chance to see Mystery Science Theater 3000, but after seeing this I am going to look it up. The premise of this movie is so simple and yet completely hilarious. First, it’s a movie within a movie. Instead of just watching any horrid movie on it’s own you get to see a horrid movie, with absolutely hilarious voice tracks mixed in.
In Hollywood After Dark you get to spend the evening with three nice guys who want to make sure that a bad movie is seen no matter what. Chances are you would not have found this one on your own. Thus, they are bringing it to you so that everyone suffers in equal amounts. Of course, thanks to the commentary you will be sure to laugh more than you cry (you would have without the tracks).
The three guys are Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett. The movie, which I decided to look up since they don’t tell you the title (or if they did, I missed it) is called Walk the Angry Beach. On IMDB it has a rating of 1.9 and if you saw it without the commentary you’d know why, although, one faithful fan said they felt it could have been the star’s big break into major films. I’m not sure he and I saw the same film, but that’s a topic for another day.
The movie includes the theatrical talents of Rue McClanahan. In the movie she is a young girl with stars in her eyes. She moves to Hollywood hoping to make it big. However, she ends up becoming a stripper at the most interesting strip club I have ever seen. Seriously, this place takes the cake! Not only is it interesting, you also get to see the future Golden Girl strip. What more could you ask for? All I can say is thank god for the commentary or I might have slit my wrists.Of course, there is more to the movie other than Rue.
There is a junk dealer, some make-out scenes, and some really really…really bad stripping. However, the commentators do a bang up job at making you forget you’re watching slop. For instance, in the scene where a stripper comes out and is wearing streamer nipple pasties and doing this god awful dance, one of them comments that is made is that “the dancer is Condie Rice who is trying to make money while in college”. Be forewarned that it is a “dark” Film Crew video, so you can expect some smutty references that are usually quite well said and they are always funny. This is one of three Film Crew DVDs to be put out this year.
The others will include a similar format with different movies and commentary based on the theme. For all the laughs I got in this one, I will be sure to look up Shout Factory and see about getting the other two as they come out. There was only one extra in this and it was a poem, “Ode to Lunch”. However, I generally don’t buy/watch DVDs for the extras so this didn’t bother me too much.
All in all, if you like comedy this is right up your alley. If you’re a bigger drama lover (like me) you will still find yourself cracking up at these three guys in a basement who were forced to entertain us while we watched Rue McClanahan strip. Oh, what a movie!
