Californication offers you another hot, new show to watch weekly on Showtime. This 30 minute show will have you laughing and shaking your head all at the same time. Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is a guy that some of us can relate to in a creative sense. He’s not a bad guy. He’s just lost his way. He’s the writer of a bestseller that turned into the worst movie in the world, jokingly starring TomKat. The movie has put Hank into writer’s block where he is set to die a slow death.
While he is waiting to die, his plan is to sleep with every woman he can. After all, a man has to keep busy. So, as you can expect, Hank gets his fair share of women. He enjoys wet dreams about nuns and wakes up to find that they are anything, but nuns. He even dabbles into teenie bopper sex, though he didn’t mean it. The girl definitely looks anything, but a teenager.
Hank has so much to deal with beyond the sex though. In addition to handling a failing career and an agent who wants him to become a blogger (which is like torture to Hank), he has a pre-teen daughter, and an ex-girlfriend who is getting married. Hank had some commitment issues and it’s almost sad to see him standing on the sidelines when the one woman he might love is getting married to someone else.
Just from the first show it is easy to see that there is one amazing season ahead of us. Showtime hit the mark again, but with other shows like Meadowlands, The Tudors, Dexter, and Weeds I cannot say I am surprised. Showtime is becoming the most watched network in my house!
Excellent performances are given by Natascha McElhone who plays Karen, Hank’s ex-lover and the mother of his child and Madeleine Martin, who plays the daughter Becca. Another great performance is given by Madeline Zima, who plays the young and beautiful, sex pot Mia. Zima, who plays the sexy teenager is actually approaching her 22 birthday. She adds something to the cast of Californication that would be missed otherwise. Her character and her artistic spark, definitely tend to build the story in a great way.
The rest of the supporting cast seems to work well together. However, it is Duchovny who stands out and makes this series what it is. This role seems perfect for the middle-aged, sometimes brooding actor.
Hank Moody is the perpetual New York fish stuck in the dismal California waters trying not to drown. The problem is he keeps grabbing the wrong women to pull himself up. Never fear though, he doesn’t keep them long enough to count. Californication is a perfectly crafted show that is sure to please adults on many levels.
If you’re looking for something new, funny, inventive, and sexy watch Californication. Once again Showtime doesn’t disappoint. I am looking forward to future episodes and seasons of this great show that has brought Duchovny back in the best way possible.
