As an action lover I am not one to turn down a chance to watch a good superhero movie. I want to be able to enjoy the comic book life of a character on screen while checking out some good action scenes in the process. Fantastic Four has always been my least favorite comic-to-movie when it comes to the movie race, but when this second installment, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, was being made; the hype was so great I decided to give it another shot. I agreed to review it and now I am wishing that I had picked out anything else on my desk because this wasn’t worth the time it took to watch.
The movie begins with the buzz about the wedding that is set to occur between Reed Richards and Sue Storm. The wedding is ruined, the first time, when the Silver Surfer buzzes into their media circus of a ceremony, and soon sends them off to try and save the world. Dr. Doom makes quite a big appearance as do some other lesser known (if you are unfamiliar to comics) bad guys.
My problem does not necessarily lay with the lukewarm story or the sub par writing for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. In that respect, it’s no better or worse than 75% of the crap that Hollywood puts out in an attempt to make a buck. Structurally speaking it is an action film in every way. There is a little bit of romance, moments of comedy, and things exploding. It’s you’re average action film.
The problem is that Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is an action film with a dull story, a poor climax (if one exists at all), and a main plot that is not interesting enough to make the subplot of the destruction of the Earth seem interesting. The Earth blowing up would have at least ended the movie and that wouldn’t have been such a bad thing. It would have actually given me a reason to score this review higher.
I don’t blame the actors much. While I wasn’t blown away by the performances of Jessica Alba or Chris Evans, the story was so ineffective that even an Oscar worthy performance might have been missed in this drivel. The nicest thing that I can say about this movie is that the credits were a welcome sight to see and for me, they were the best part of the movie.
Fans of the first movie may be interested in picking this one up, because if you liked that crap then this film might not be so bad for you. Considering I didn’t like the first Fantastic Four movie either, not much has changed for me. I don’t feel there were a considerable amount of differences between the two films. That being said, I am sure that fans of that film will like this movie.
If you are going to buy Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, you should be prepared to experience a wide array of special features. When it comes to this area they certainly did not skimp on the possibilities.
There are the basic special features such as movie trailers, commentary, and photo galleries. From there you will have a chance to check out several featurettes including, “Family Bonds”, “Scoring the Fantastic”, “Character Design with Special Motion”, “The Power Cosmic”, “The Fantasticar: State of the Art”, and “Sentinal of the Spaceways: Comic Book Origins of The Silver Surfer.” Several deleted scenes are also included.
The result, at least for me, was a wasted couple of hours. I realize that others may find something worth watching in this movie though I am not one of them. At best, I highly recommend renting this one before you buy it. I doubt many that are not die-hard fans of the Fantastic Four series will be overly interested in this, so I would rather see you waste three dollars as opposed to the going retail rate for a disc full of boring junk.

I am the proud Papa of a son, Dylan Michael Keller. Other than spending time with my son, I have two main obsessions in life; video games & movies. Often, the two accompany time spent with Dylan.
I've been married to Andrea for 13 years this December. One thing I've learned about married life is to always expect the unexpected. After nearly eleven years with just the three of us, and our Golden Retriever, Braeden, I've just found out I'm going to be a dad again.
In my professional life, I'm a bit of a cyber geek. I enjoy D&D, writing stories, role-playing, computer games, working on websites, and just hanging out. I work for a computer firm doing computer-tech type work and that's all I can really say about my job.
In my fantasy life, I escape to the world of film. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen The Return of the King at least 37 times. I signed up to review movies, and you can guarantee I'll do the job right. I hope you enjoy my reviews and always remember kids...Make Love, Not Warcraft.
