I’m not always a comedy fan, but I love anything quirky or unusual. I found the advertisements for Pushing Daisies to be irresistible. I just had to watch this show, and that’s exactly what I did, from the moment it first aired on ABC on October 3, 2007. While I found the show to be extremely excellent, I just didn’t have time to continue watching it. I knew I’d be getting the DVD, eventually, for review, so I pushed the series from my mind.

Now, I simply cannot miss season two of Pushing Daisies. Now that I’ve seen the entire first season, I’m so enamored with the series. I love the characters, the storylines, the song and dance numbers (a la Olive Snook), and just about everything else concerning this show. Seriously, tell me one thing that’s bad about Pushing Daisies. It won’t matter. I’ll call you a liar. The indisputable truth is that Pushing Daisies is the most innovative and original show on television currently.

Drillbit TaylorWriter: John Hughes, Seth Rogan, Kristofor Brown

Cast: Nate Hartley, Troy Gentile, Ian Roberts, Owen Wilson, Lisa Ann Walter, Beth Littleford, Valerie Tian, David Dorfman, Alex Frost, Josh Peck, Danny R. McBride, Casey Boersma, Dylan Boersma
Rating: PG-13
Studio: Dreamworks & Paramount
Release Date: July 1, 2008

I like comedies that actually have interesting stories. Drillbit Taylor looked funny, but I wasn’t sure how interesting or particularly original the story was. Considering this was written by John Hughes, who has returned to the “high school” element he made so famous in movies I grew up with in the 1980s, I knew there had to be something redeemable about this movie and I was right. This isn’t as good as other comedies, but it isn’t horrible either. For a quiet, Saturday afternoon watching movies, Drillbit Taylor is perfect. Just don’t expect it to win awards through the Academy.

Originally, I didn’t know that John Hughes developed the idea for this film, which was also penned by Seth Rogan and Kristofor Brown. If anyone knows high school outcasts its Hughes, who made a living writing about them in the 1980s with such hits as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink. I’m kind of sad they didn’t cast Anthony Michael Hall or Molly Ringwald in cameo roles, which would have been awesome, but c’est la vie. The movie is still enjoyable and you’ll get enough laughs to get you through this comedy.

Release Information:
Drillbit Taylor was developed from a story idea by John Hughes. The reclusive writer is credited with helping to develop the story for this movie, though it is unclear exactly how much say he had in the actual film and the writing of the screenplay. Drillbit Taylor arrived on over 3,000 North American movie screens on March 21, 2008. The film debuted in fourth place during its opening weekend netting over $14 million. Since then, it has made around $50 million worldwide.

Paramount has released multiple versions of Drillbit Taylor, as of July 1, 2008. There is a standard DVD (widescreen), an Unrated Extended Survival Edition, and the Extended Survival Edition in Blu-Ray. You can pick up a copy of this movie wherever you purchase DVDs. Drillbit Taylor (widescreen) is available on Amazon for $19.99 as is the Unrated Extended Survival Edition. The Blu-Ray, which is what the review is based on, can be purchased at Amazon for $27.95.

When I heard this movie was coming out I was really looking forward to watching it. I realize now that just because something sounds good in theory, it does not mean it will end up being as good as it sounded originally. Raising Jeffrey Dahmer is one of those movies. Serial killer buffs are aware that Dahmer had many ups and downs in his life prior to his killing spree that could have made for an interesting movie. The majority of these things were either brushed over or left out completely. It was disappointing at best, and boring at worst.

I understand that low budget films face obstacles. Generally speaking, I do not expect the world from these films. However, good acting can make up for things like a lack of special effects and other things that bigger budgets can buy. Raising Jeffrey Dahmer didn’t really have good acting though. It didn’t really have much of anything, to be honest.

Release Information:
From what I understand this movie was based on the book of the same name by Dahmer’s father, Lionel. I haven’t read the book, so I cannot comment on whether the movie is better or worse than the book. However, after seeing the movie, I seriously hope the book offered a better read because there wasn’t much to see here. Unless you like to torture yourself by watching bad movies, this won’t be your cup of tea.

DVD Review: How She Move

How She MoveWriter: Annmarie Morais
Director: Ian Igbal Rashid
Cast: Tre Armstrong, Boyd Banks, Cle Bennett, Ardon Bess, Conrad Coates, Keyshia Cole
Rating: PG-13
Studio: Paramount
Release Date: April 29, 2008

You know, I liked Save the Last Dance. It was one of the first movies to start the dance craze in movies. From there, the less likable Honey, Step Up, the crappy sequel Step Up 2: The Streets and other movies were released. They were released to the point where any mention of another dance themed movie was met with groans, not only by myself and fellow reviewers, but by the general public who were getting tired of the same sub-standard story being rehashed over and over again.

I fully admit that I went into this movie prepared to hate it. I’d seen my fill of semi-good dancing with less than stellar acting and a recycled plot. What I wasn’t prepared for was the freshness of How She Move. The dancing, the acting and the plot were all excellent. While How She Move might be a dance movie, it isn’t the same ol’ dance movie you expect to watch time and again as each one is produced. This movie has more than just rhythm. It has spirit!

Release Information:
How She Move made its film debut at the Sundance Film festival on January 23, 2007. Oddly enough, it wasn’t until January 25, 2008 when the film was able to make its big screen debut. The film, which was distributed by Paramount, has received mostly good reviews and is deemed one of the better dance movies out there.

Paramount has decided to release How She Move. It was made available on April 29, 2008. It can be purchased at your local retailer such as Wal-Mart or Best Buy or it can be purchased online at the store’s site. It can also be purchased online at Amazon where it is available for $19.99.

There will be Blood DVD CaseWriters: Paul Thomas Anderson, Upton Sinclair
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Cast: Daniel Day Lewis, Kevin J. O’Connor, Dillon Freasier, Ciarán Hinds, Barry Del Sherman, Paul F. Tompkins, Paul Dano, Sydney McCallister
Rating: R
Studio: Paramount
Release Date: April 8, 2008

This year was the year for amazing movies when it came to the Oscars. Normally, there will be one or two movies that end up being nominated that are unworthy. That was not the case in 2007. There Will Be Blood may not be the most popular in terms of storyline, but the acting was definitely superior to any of the other nominated films and most of those other films were incredibly deserving of the Oscar nod that they received, as well.

I had heard about this film for months, but I had absolutely no clue what it was about. Even when the Oscars rolled around, I had no clue about this film other than the title and the fact that the lead character was played by Daniel Day Lewis. Knowing about Lewis’ intricate style of method acting, I knew the performance was going to be exceptional. I also know that Day Lewis doesn’t usually pick drab, dreary, or mindless films to star in, so I knew there had to be some kind of story to make this film worthwhile.

Having seen many of his films, I was well aware that he doesn’t play in anything bad, but that didn’t help me learn anything tangible about this film. It would be the book by Upton Sinclair that arrived with the movie that gave me an idea of what to expect. Normally, I probably wouldn’t find any interest in watching a film about oil drilling. Daniel Day Lewis seems to make things much more interesting, though I have to admit, I didn’t spend one minute of the movie watching him and seeing the person that I know he is. Instead, with the sign of any good actor, I was only able to see his character.

There Will Be Blood is one of those movies that people will not understand completely. It’s probably the least liked of the Oscar Pictures of 2007 (though No Country for Old Men seems to be hated for its end by those who ‘just don’t get it’). I have to say that it was one of my favorites because I understood the point of the film and the acting was far superior to others I’d seen in 2007. I felt that the storyline and the motives that moved the picture along were incredibly clever, but then again, what do I know? I’m just a critic.
