Goodbye Skunky Overmyer – A Reflection on the Voice that Changed American Idol

March 20, 2008

Amanda OvermyerAmanda has left the building. In fact, by now it’s possible that she’s left Hollywood. She’s packed up her black clothing, her Aerosmith necklaces, and she’s headed back home. I have to admit that I didn’t think that you would do it America.

I thought you would leave her on, until her rousing rendition of “Dreamlover” by Mariah Carey that came with a twist that sounded like something sang on the back of a truck during a rock n’ roll, honky tonk. But alas! You surprised me by saying goodbye to Amanda, who we at Literary Illusions have affectionately named “Skunky” since her hair reminds of us of that of a skunk, and saving those who attend the Idol concert from having to hear her bad renditions of any song she happens to sing.

Before I get into my personal goodbye, please enjoy a few moments of silence while you sit baffled listening to Skunky ruin the Beatles for the last time.

RIP Amanda Overmyer’s Singing Career – Booted 3/19/08

I really didn’t have to even add that clip because if you’ve heard Skunky sing one song, you have ultimately heard her sing every song that she knows how to sing. She has one key…off key, that is. Her performance value may improve after drinking a gallon of vodka, but my attention span isn’t that large anymore, so I could never get drunk enough to enjoy her for the true talent that Simon and the gang kept saying that she was. There are so many things that I don’t like about her voice that I don’t know where to start. Being nice, I will say that I just don’t think she should have ever landed on that stage. Every year they need a few Sanjaya’s, but he was at least amusing in a number of ways where Skunky just fell flat. There is one thing about Skunky’s voice that I love though. That thing is the combination of sounds that come out of her. While making jokes today, I finally realized who Amanda sounds like and why it is so funny to me.

I love Trey Parker. I love the movie Orgasmo. The first song in the movie is called “Now you’re a Man”. This song, which is supposed to be funny, obviously, really does show that Trey has Skunky’s vocal ability down pat.

Now you’re a Man

Now, if you’ve listened to this I bet you can hear the similarities. However, I felt something was missing. Trey is so close, but yet there is a feminine quality that he just lacks (of course) that Skunky has (surprisingly). After considering the sound that Skunky offers, I closed my eyes and just felt the music.

I tried to ignore the fact that she somewhat resembles the love child of Lisa Marie Presley and Whacko Jacko that just happens to visit the salon that Elvira goes to get her hair done at. Finally, I realized what it was that is missing from her voice (as Trey shows us)…its that Cher-esque ”Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves” sound!

Cher ala 1970

After hearing Skunky sing on that big stage, I am not sure that American Idol will ever be the same again. The sound of her wailing is one I will never forget. Unlike Sparkles and amusing pseudo-contestants of the past, Skunky was the real deal. She was real scary and I’m real glad that ya’ll voted her off.
